Introduction
This video is about using GearLog's ability to read and write Near Field
Communication (NFC) tags. NFC tags are an alternative to barcodes and QR.
How to Assign an NFC Tag to Equipment
Follow these steps to link a tag to an existing asset:
- Open the specific piece of equipment in the platform.
- Tap Edit.
- Scroll down to the Identification section.
- Tap Scan to load the scanner interface.
- Select Scan Tag.
- Hover your device over the NFC tag.
- The unique ID the manufacturer baked into the tag will be read;
Save the
equipment to finalize the link.
Scanning Equipment via NFC
To identify an item quickly once the tag is assigned:
- Go to Tools and select Scanner.
- Tap Scan and hover over the tag.
- GearLog will automatically navigate to the corresponding equipment record.
Writing Custom Serial Numbers to NFC Tags
You can make the process more efficient by writing your own serial numbers directly
into the tags. This ensures the value in the tag matches your own user serial
number.
Steps to Write to a Tag:
- Go to the Tools menu.
- Select NFC Tag Writer.
- Input the value you want to write (e.g., your assigned asset serial number).
- Tap Write and hover your device over the tag.
Note: When scanning a custom-written tag, the pop-up will then show
two
values: the tag manufacturer's unique ID and your user serial number that you wrote
to the tag. Simply select "Use Record"
to go straight to the asset.
Other Notes
All other processes—including loaning, returning, and editing—work identically
whether you are using NFC tags, barcodes, or QR codes.
