Search

This video looks at how to use the search tool to locate gear and also covers how the search tool is useful if you have a barcode/QR code scanner paired up with your laptop/desktop.

Introduction

The video provides an introduction to the search tool within GearLog. This tool allows you to search for groups of equipment that have similar names or serial numbers, or to search specifically for exact pieces of equipment. You can access the search tool by selecting "Search" from the menu bar.

Key features and options of the search tool:

Show Search Tips

The "Show search tips" option at the bottom is helpful when learning the tool for the first time because each option on the search pane will gain a description underneath it. Once you are familiar with the tool, you can hide the tips to save screen space.

Search Parameters

GearLog accepts a variety of search parameters, allowing you to search for equipment by its name, serial number, barcode number, manufacturer's name, and other similar identifiers.

Exact Match

  • Setting "Exact match" to "Yes" will only retrieve equipment that precisely matches the input in the search box. This is demonstrated by searching for a specific serial number, which retrieves one piece of equipment.
  • Leaving "Exact match" as "No" will return a partial match, which can be used to find a variety of equipment with similar serial numbers (or name etc).

Maximum Number of Results

You can set a maximum number of results if you expect a large number of matches and do not want to wait a long time.

Auto Search

Setting "Auto search" to "Yes" will automatically run the search as soon as text appears in the "search for" box.

This feature is especially useful when using a scanner paired with a laptop to input serial numbers or unique IDs, as the search will run immediately after the barcode contents are entered.

Action on Successful Match

After a unique and specific piece of equipment is successfully matched, the platform can be configured to perform an action. The default action is to view the equipment, but other options include:

  • Edit it.
  • Inspect it.
  • Loan it.
  • Return it.
  • Add it to a list.
  • Remove it from a list.
